The Measure of a Man
This entry is long overdue, but I thought I should still write it cos I think it's still very much a relevant journey at this season of my life.
3 weeks ago I shared with my guys what does it mean to be a man. This was spurred on by a burning desire in my heart to inculcate into my guys, Godly values so they can be pillars of strength for the next generation. I was also spurred on by the decadence in masculinity in our generation today, where men are taught by media that life is all about fulfilling their own selfish desires. Where we have people like Justin Timberlake and Ashton Kucher as the role models of the MTV generation these days. Men who can't hold their own and very much still boys stuck in a man's body.
So, I asked them this question,"Name me a trait that you consider is a trait of a real man."
I got answers like "responsible" and "humble" among other traits. A brother shared about how his dad showed himself as a man by taking care of his family, feeding them and providing for them and making sure that they do not lack.
These men did not make it to TIME magazine's Man of the Year, but they sure made an impact on the lives of our brothers. These role models of their homes to a large extent, influenced the way their sons turned out in the later part of their lives.
I realised that I've not shared during the session what I think is one trait that makes a man, a real MAN.
To me, a real man, "knows what he's doing and when to do those things and does it."
This whole sentence encompassed the traits of
Discipline, i.e. I may not feel like doing it, but if it needs to be done, I'll do it.
Decisiveness, i.e. Once I'm set on doing something, I'll do it, and...
Determination, i.e. I'll make sure I'll see to its completion.
Direction, i.e. I've heard, I've seen, and I know where I'm headed.
Tampered by the right values and especially the guidance of the Holy Spirit, these traits bring assurance to the people around a man. It builds security and it brings trust, as people know that this man is reliable and has a sense of purpose.
Amazingly, the next week, during Ps Eugene's 144 meeting, he shared on exactly what I shared about building a generation of men who would leave behind a Godly legacy for their children. And he shares that the only reason why there's so much strife and trouble in this world is because men have not risen up to their fundamental calling in their lives, the rightful role that God has ordained for men, and because of this, it is wreaking havoc in the families, and ultimately the society.
I'm encouraged by his sharing as it means I'm on the right track here. :)
